FIMP is delighted to present this exhibition of works on paper by Lawrence Morelli. Morelli's work is strongly rooted in the modernist idea that a painting is first and foremost about the painting itself. His paintings are records of specific events, events that involved a relationship between himself, the subject that he was studying, and the image that was evolving on the paper. There is an interesting tension between the artist's record of observations made of the model or landscape, and his responses to the visual discoveries that occur while building the image. Morelli does not feel bound to be true to his subject - he's more concerned about being true to the painting. He lets the viewer stand at his shoulder and witness this struggle, and this is one of the strengths of these works.
